How are comprehension questions framed?

Comprehension questions are framed into two basic groups: lower and higher level thinking.

Examples of high-level questions.

  1. Examine Monkey’s facial expression. What emotion is he expressing? Which facial details help you understand how he is feeling?
  2. Explain how the details on this page create a feeling of suspense.
  3. Why do you think Mom decides to allow Josh to play?
  4. The story teaches a basic message about obeying. Remember how Josh responded to his mother each time he did not obey? Explain how Josh’s actions illustrated the central idea/theme message that obedience is important?

What are low-level questions?

Low-level questions check for basic understanding. They usually require students to simply recall, define, list, memorize, and name. These question types do not place a high cognitive demand on the reader. By design, the reader only needs to “bring back from memory” and slightly understand.
