Empower literacy coaches and teachers to help young readers own the process of “thinking about their thinking”—a metacognitive approach to teaching reading.

Professional Development Training for Coaches
and Teachers of Early Learners, ages 3-8

OVERVIEW
Teachers read to and with their students on the belief that the experience will foster critical thinking. However, shared reading often does NOT guarantee children are comprehending text. You can help to foster critical thinking and meaningful discussion and equip children to become active readers, avoiding the pitfalls of encouraging passive exposure to words and pictures on pages.

A Critical-Thinking Approach for Early Readers is a research-based approach designed for literacy coaches and teachers of young readers. This workshop will sharpen practitioners and improve their methodology of teaching young readers how to be cognizant about their thinking.

During teacher-led and shared-group reading, children are often fixated on the illustrations and rarely consider the printed text. Teachers often miss opportunities to increase children’s comprehension development. But, there is a way to transition word callers to critical thinkers. My Teacher, Literacy, and Me teaches the art of gradually structuring low- to high-level questions and utilizing multiple comprehension strategies simultaneously and flexibly to show how effective readers must shift attention between different cues in order to develop a skilled understanding.

In this interactive three-hour session, teachers and literacy coaches will be able to:
      (1) Expand their teacher toolkit with power-packed strategies that awaken students’ critical thinking skills by exposing young readers to active and reflective thinking through connecting, aligning, analyzing, drawing conclusion, evaluating, and synthesizing.

     (2) Learn how to identify young readers’ comprehension barriers and the most effective fix-up strategies to use.

    (3) Learn the art of scaffolding low- to moderate- to high-level questions that foster critical thinking.
